What this number is, and what it is not

It is an indicative installed cost range for the wall or fence itself, in current South East Queensland money. It is not a fixed quote, not an offer, and not a design or engineering opinion. Two jobs with identical dimensions can land at opposite ends of the range once access, ground conditions and drainage are assessed on site, which is exactly why the output is a range rather than a single figure.

The formula, in plain language

For a retaining wall we multiply length by height to get the wall face area in square metres, then multiply that area by the low and high rate for the material you picked. Where the height is over 1.0 m we lift the low end of the rate band 40% of the way toward the high end, because an engineered wall sits at the top of the published band or above. For a fence we multiply the length in metres by the low and high per-metre rate for the material. Both results are then held at a minimum job allowance of $1,200 - $2,200 for walls and $1,000 - $1,800 for fences, because a very small job is dominated by fixed costs (mobilisation, plant hire, concrete and delivery minimums) that a per-unit rate does not capture. Figures are rounded to the nearest $50.

Where every rate comes from

They cover materials and labour per square metre of wall face, and each band is open-ended at the top for a reason.

Be honest about the fencing bands: they are a different class of number to the wall bands above. No comparable published fencing price table exists for Queensland, so these are a market-range estimate synthesised from quotes Australian homeowners posted publicly on renovation discussion forums through 2025 and 2026 - Colorbond quoted at roughly $110 to $162 per metre with accessibility and ground condition named as the movers, whole-run Colorbond quotes in the $6,000 to $8,000 bracket for a suburban boundary, and the repeated warning that a headline per-metre figure excludes posts, concrete and labour. The Colorbond band is set at that observed floor, with the top extended to $180 to carry the access and ground variance those same quotes describe. Timber paling is set slightly below steel, at $95 to $165, because paling materials sit under steel per metre while the labour is comparable. Treat it as a market range, not a price list.

Assumptions the estimate makes, and what it excludes

• Excludes GST.
• Excludes excavation and spoil removal, which can add materially on a cut-and-fill block.
• Excludes subsoil drainage and backfill. Queensland's residential design code (QDC NMP 1.7) requires subsoil drainage behind retaining walls, and it is a structural item, not an optional extra, so check whether a quote includes it.
• Excludes engineering, certification and council application fees. A wall over 1.0 m above natural ground level generally needs building approval and an engineered design to AS 4678, certified on a Form 15 by a registered professional engineer.
• Excludes difficult access, rock, demolition of an existing wall or fence, gates, and retaining wall or fence work on a slope that needs stepping or terracing.
• Holds constant the things a site visit decides: soil type, surcharge from a driveway or pool above the wall, post spacing for your wind classification, and the finish level.
• Ignores your specific council's fees and processing times, which differ across Brisbane, Ipswich, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.
